Before we visit Tomar, we start with a close by wonder. The Almourol Castle is located in small Island in the middle of Tagus River, and it was an extremely emporium of military defence and of protection of the commerce that was practised along the Tagus.
Surrounded by a mysterious and romantic atmosphere, this Castle is one of the most representative examples of the military architecture of that time, evoking at the same time the origins of the Kingdom of Portugal and the Order of the Knight Templars.
Come aboard a small cruise through the River and let yourself be amazed by this beauty of historic architecture and the surrounding landscape.
Moving on, enjoy the view of Constância, our Poem Town where poet Camões lived.
We will continue the tour up the margins of Zêzere River to the Dam of Castelo do Bode, where we can admire one of the biggest dams in Portugal. After this, we are all set to visit Tomar.
Visit Tomar
Once in Tomar, the medieval city washed by Nabão River, it is a must to visit the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Olivais, a very important presence during the occupation of 200 years of the Knight Templars in Portugal, and the Grand Master of this order and founder of the city of Tomar, Dom Gualdim Pais, was buried.
We will continue with a visit to the Tomar Castle and Convent of Christ where you can take a look at the famous Window of the Chapter, splendour maximum of Manueline Art, full of references to the discoveries and the history of Portugal.
Let yourself be transported to other eras and, if you wish, enjoy an enigmatic sixteenth-century lunch.
The Route of the Castles follows with the visit to Castle of Ourém, which is also from the time of the Knight Templars. Two adjacent buildings were built which are also in ruins and from where you can have a 360º view that will leave you breathless.
